I’ve faced harder things than this.

Eighty-Three (83) years of living

— including years spent in service with the US Army 101st Airborne Division

— had taught me to never flinch.

But driving home from the VA Hospital urologist’s office, the car was quiet except for the engine, and I found myself gripping the wheel a little tighter than usual.

The printout on the passenger seat said, “renal mass, further evaluation recommended.”

I’d nodded at the doctor, thanked her, and walked out

— the way you do when you’ve been trained to hold it together.
It wasn’t until I got home, sat in my favorite chair, and looked at that paper again that the questions came.

I discovered that when people receive news about a kidney mass or declining kidney function, one of the first questions they ask is;

“As a kidney patient, what foods should I eat now?”

In your 30-Day Mediterranean Recipe Daily Food Charts, you will discover helpful tools to help you feel organized and empowered.

Smart Protein Swaps: Evidence shows that heavy red meat intake is harder on your kidneys than heavy intake of other protein sources.

Our charts help you easily swap red meat for kidney-protective choices like fish, chicken, eggs, or legumes.

Kidney-Gentle Vegetables We highlight vegetables that are easier on aging kidneys, such as red cabbage, cauliflower, and red bell peppers.

For instance, red cabbage provides antioxidants and fiber without pushing your potassium levels too high.

Antioxidant-Rich Fruits: Learn how to safely incorporate kidney-friendly fruits like blueberries, red grapes, and fresh cranberries, which are naturally low in potassium but rich in protective antioxidants.

Flavor Without the Sodium. High sodium levels drive high blood pressure, which places immense stress on the delicate vessels in your kidneys.

Our charts guide you in using herbs, garlic, onion, and lemon to add delicious flavor to your meals without relying on salt or heavily processed foods.

Smart Hydration Tracking: Chronic mild dehydration forces your kidneys to constantly concentrate urine.

We include simple guidelines to help you maintain a pale yellow urine color by hydrating smartly throughout the day.

Small improvements performed consistently can become powerful habits over time.

By keeping these printable charts on your refrigerator or digital device, you can visually track your progress, reduce the mental fatigue of meal planning, and establish routines for long-term health.

You are not alone.

Kidney Mass Recovery was created for people seeking practical guidance, healthy food ideas, daily wellness tools, educational resources, and faith-filled encouragement as they navigate kidney-related health concerns.

I understand that navigating what is safe for your body can feel confusing when you are focusing on your kidney health.

It is completely normal to have questions about everyday products in your medicine cabinet. Let’s look at common types of medications you may want to be cautious with.

When it comes to protecting your kidneys, the most important class of medications to be aware of is NSAIDs (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs).

While they are widely available over-the-counter for treating headaches, joint pain, and back aches, they are actually the leading cause of medication-induced acute kidney injury.
Common examples of NSAIDs include:
  • Ibuprofen (often found in Advil and Motrin)
  • Naproxen (often found in Aleve)
  • Diclofenac (found in Voltaren)
  • Certain over-the-counter pain powders, such as Goody’s powder
Long-term use of these anti-inflammatory medications can place significant stress on your kidneys and may contribute to chronic kidney disease. Additionally, certain prescription antibiotics can also negatively impact your kidney function with long-term use.
If you want to keep your kidneys healthy, it is best to avoid NSAIDs whenever possible.

If you absolutely need them, use them only sporadically and for short periods, never exceeding three consecutive days.

Because everyone’s body is different, our Kidney Health Journal can be a wonderful resource for you right now. You can use it to write down every over-the-counter medication, supplement, or pain reliever you currently take, so you can review them safely with your doctor to determine whether they are appropriate for your specific level of kidney function.

Please remember to seek emergency care for any urgent symptoms. Always consult your healthcare professionals before starting, stopping, or making any changes to your treatment or medications. Individual medical situations vary greatly, and the educational information provided here is not medical advice.
Remember, knowledge is one of the most powerful tools in your recovery journey. Small, consistent steps can make a meaningful difference. Continue working closely with your healthcare team and explore the resources available at KidneyMassRecovery.com for additional support and education.

Early Warning of Kidney Problem-Homepage

Noticing a change, such as foamy urine, can be concerning.
It is completely normal to have questions when your body shows you something new, and it is wonderful that you are being proactive about understanding what it means.
When you see foamy urine, it can often be an early signal that protein—specifically a type of protein called albumin—is leaking into your urine.

Your kidneys are designed to be master filters, keeping important substances like protein in your body while removing waste and excess fluid.

However, when the delicate filters inside your kidneys are under stress, some of that protein can slip through into the urine.

The presence of this protein in the urine is actually one of the earliest signs of kidney stress, and it can show up years before other indicators—like your overall kidney function number (eGFR)—start to decline.

Because of this, noticing foamy urine is a very helpful early warning sign that gives you a chance to take protective action.

Practical Next Steps Homepage: When you visit your doctor, you can mention that you have noticed foamy urine and ask them to run a specific test called the UACR (Urine Albumin-to-Creatinine Ratio).

This test specifically checks for those protein leaks and helps give you and your doctor a much clearer picture of your overall kidney health.

Homepage-Resources to Help You Prepare. To help you feel grounded before your next appointment, you may find our Kidney Health Journal incredibly helpful right now. It is a great place to record your daily symptoms, track your hydration, and write down questions—such as asking your doctor about the UACR test—so you feel completely organized when speaking with your healthcare team.
